In 1499, when Vasco da Gama's fleet returned to Lisbon on its first sea voyage to India, the return to the sea to catch favorable winds and the more serious state of Paulo da Gama's illness led it to approach the Azores , and disembarking on Terceira island. According to other authors, Vasco da Gama was deeply shaken by his brother's death, having been in Terceira for between 1 and 3 months.
