- The ancient capital of Lamphun Located about 25km south of Chiang Mai,
Lamphun is the ruins of the capital of the Hariphunchai Kingdom, founded in
the 11th century by the Mon people who migrated from the Lopburi region in
central Thailand before the ancestors of the Thai people migrated south from
China's Yunnan Province.

Wat Phra That Haripunchai A temple was built here during the Haripunchai
dynasty. It was later conquered by the Lanna Thai Kingdom, and the current
pagoda was built by King Mengrai in 1108 AD. The golden chedi and Buddhist
hall on the premises are worth seeing. Wat Phra That Haripunchai is said to
have been the model for the chedi at Doi Suthep Temple, which is
representative of Chiang Mai.

Wat Chamathewi Wat Chamathewi was built by the Mon princess Chamathewi in the
early Haripunchai Kingdom. A total of 60 Buddha images are enshrined in the
recesses of the five-story, four-sided Kukut pagoda of this temple.
