Highlights

In this special safari tour you will get a chance to explore two highlights West of Tanzania, which are designed for wildlife adventure. The far west of Tanzania gives home to two of Tanzania’s lesser known national parks; Katavi National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park. This western circuit is extremely remote, tricky to access and pretty costly to visit. As a result few people make the effort to come here and so it has remained an untouched, unique experience, and absolutely worth visiting.

Itinerary

Katavi National Park (Monday)
  • Katavi National Park

    6 hoursAdmission Ticket Free
Early in the morning our guide/driver will pick you up at the hotel to Arusha Municipal Airport (ARK) and take a chartered bush flight to Katavi National Park. Upon arrival you will meet your friendly guide to accompany you to your stylish and authentic tented safari camp where you will get lunch, later you will begin your unforgettable safari adventure at Katavi National Park. Katavi National Park is at its best mostly in the dry season, when the plains fill with thousands of zebra, topi and impala. Hartebeest, giraffe, and Defassa waterbuck are also very common, there's a large population of resident elephants, and some impressive herds of buffalo. Katavi is a great park for watching lion-buffalo interactions. Spotted hyena are frequently seen, whilst leopard appear on the woodland fringes, but are more elusive. Wild dog do live here, but tend to stick to the escarpment and are rarely seen on the plains. After a short game drive you will head back to your accommodation.

Early in the morning after breakfast you can choose a dawn to dusk game viewing with packed lunch as you explore this remote western wilderness or return to camp in between game drives for lunch and relaxation. Katavi is the third largest park in Tanzania but is one of the least visited parks; you will likely see no other vehicles during your stay. We can't think of anywhere else that showcases buffalo and lion duels quite so well as Katavi; game drives here can be seriously explosive! Katavi is equally famous for its enormous crocodile and hippo populations, the huge hippo pool can see 600 hippos at its peak and nowhere else in Africa do crocodiles hibernate in dens as they do here. After a full game drive you will head back to your accommodation at Katavi Wildlife Camp for dinner and an overnight.
