- Attractions Introduction -
The valley of Ceshi Gorge, formed by a volcanic eruption 13 million years ago,
boasts Shodoshima's largest waterfall, reaching a height of 21 meters. Its
name, Ceshi Falls, stemmed from its resemblance to sake pouring from the
gorge. Ceshi Gorge itself later acquired the name Ceshi Gorge. Originally,
Ceshi Gorge was home to numerous wild monkeys, but during the Showa era,
captive breeding was initiated for research, and the experiment was successful
within just three months. At the time, there were approximately 130 monkeys,
but now as many as 500 live in the area. The monkeys continue to eat sweet
potatoes grown on Shodoshima.
Kankakei in Shodoshima, Kagawa Prefecture, is known for its "Omote Twelve and
Satohachi" (Sato Eight). These refer to the two hiking routes that lead from
the base of the mountain to the observation deck near the ropeway's summit
station (612 meters above sea level). The western route, called the "Omote
Tozan Trail," and the eastern route, called the "Sato Tozan Trail," offer
twelve and eight breathtaking views, respectively.
Upon entering, you'll be greeted by a scene from the early Showa era.
Shodoshima was the setting for the classic film "Twenty-Four Eyes." The
filming location, built during the filming, has been preserved in its original
state and is open to the public. The neighborhood, featuring residential
buildings, a wooden school building, and village alleyways, faithfully
recreates the early Showa era, evoking a sense of nostalgia and a time warp.
