Wuzhen, a thousand-year-old ancient town nestled in the waterways of China’s Jiangnan region, resembles a flowing ink painting. With its stone-paved alleys, white walls and black tiles, and charming bridges over gentle streams, it exudes a unique oriental charm. Rich in history and culture, Wuzhen is also renowned as the annual host of the World Internet Conference, symbolizing the fusion of tradition and modernity. Strolling through Wuzhen feels like a journey through time, where visitors can experience the timeless beauty of Jiangnan’s heritage alongside the vibrant openness of a forward-looking China.
Wucun is a historic village located 500 meters north of the West Scenic Area in Wuzhen, closely nestled along the Grand Canal and covering a total area of 300,000 square meters.. Backed by the Grand Canal, the entire settlement is built along the riverbank, with water drawn into the village to integrate the very essence of canal culture. Even today, Wucun preserves the remains of the canal’s old wharf, and two typical harbors of the Grand Canal—Wangjin Bay (at the point where Wangjin Li leads into Wucun) and Wucun Bay (just beyond Wangfan Bridge in Wucun)—both lie within its boundaries. Boasting abundant agricultural products and vast green spaces, Wucun radiates a vitality rarely seen along the canal’s banks, and its farming traditions and folk customs stand as prime examples and crystallizations of canal culture.
