The Journey of Fuji Pilgrimage: 'Fuji-michi'
Kōun-in, a temple offering Zen retreats, was founded in 1398 at the foot of Mount Fuji in Tsuru City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Tsuru City is home to 'Fuji-michi', a historic path taken by travelers heading to Mount Fuji.
Mount Fuji has long been revered as a symbol of natural worship. In the 17th century, a new folk religion known as Fujikō emerged, centering on Mount Fuji as its primary object of worship. A core tenet of Fujikō was for followers to climb Mount Fuji at least once in their lifetime. During this era, many pilgrims passed through Tsuru City, which served as one of the main routes from Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Mount Fuji.
Kōun-in became a popular stop for travelers seeking to purify their minds and bodies during their journey. Today, honoring its historical role as a sanctuary for cleansing and reflection, Kōun-in offers 'Zen Retreats' to support the well-being of people in the modern world.
