    With a history of almost 600 years, The Black Church is the City symbol of Brasov. Modeled after the famous Saint Sebaldus Church from Nurnberg, the church took almost 100 years to be designed and built in order for each detail of the Gothic architecture to be included and perfectly made until the last detail. The location was chosen in the valley surrounded by the thick forest, since it is known that a Catholic nunnery existed in the spot of the actual church before the arrival of the Teutonic knights in the area. In 1689, the overwhelming fire destroyed several parts of the town, and highly damaged the church, the roof being caught in the fire and fell over the floor, leaving a heavy cloud of ash. It is said that the smoke and the flames turned the colour of the walls so black that the name of the church became The Black Church.
