According to legend, it was built before the Shwedagon Pagoda during the time of the Buddha, making it more than 2,600 years old. Burmese legend states that the site for the Shwedagon Pagoda was asked to be revealed from an old nat who resided at the place where the Sule Pagoda now stands.

On the southern side of the lake, floats a Shin Upagot shrine. Upagot is a Bodhisattva (Buddhist saint) who is said to protect human beings in moments of mortal danger.

    Shwenandaw Monastery was built in 1878 by King Thibaw Min, who dismantled and relocated the apartment formerly occupied by his father, King Mindon Min, just before Mindon Min's death. The monastery is known for its teak carvings of Buddhist myths, which adorn its walls and roofs. The monastery is built in the traditional Burmese architectural style. Shwenandaw Monastery is the single remaining major original structure of the original Royal Palace today.

    Kuthodaw Pagoda - literally Royal Merit, and formally titled Mahalawka Marazein is a Buddhist stupa, located in Mandalay, Burma (Myanmar), that contains the world's largest book. It lies at the foot of Mandalay Hill and was built during the reign of King Mindon. The stupa itself, which is gilded above its terraces, is 188 feet (57 m) high, and is modelled after the Shwezigon Pagoda at Nyaung-U near Bagan. In the grounds of the pagoda are 729 kyauksa gu or stone-inscription caves, each containing a marble slab inscribed on both sides with a page of text from the Tripitaka, the entire Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism.

  • Mingun Bell

    Another relic of Bodaypaya's megamania is the Mingun Bell. Mingun Bell is the world's biggest ringing bell with a height of 3.7 meters. Weighing 90 metric tons, the Mingun Bell was casted in bronze in 1808, and once it was completed, Bodaypaya had the master craftsman in order to stop him making anything similar. The Bell was made of bronze; but it is said that Buddhist devotees inserted gold, silver ornaments and jewellery into the bronze. It measures eleven cubits and four rounds in diameter at its mouth, and weighs 55,555 viss (or 90,718 kilograms or 199,999 pounds).

    The Mingun Pagoda is a massive unfinished pagoda built at the end of the 18th century, that was meant to be the largest pagoda in the country. The massive paya, also known as the Mantara Gyi Pagoda, the Mingun Pahtodawgyi and the Great Royal Stupa makes for an impressive site on the banks of the Irrawaddy river. In front of the pagoda facing the river are the remains of two giant Chinthe lions about 29 meters high, guarding the temple. At the center of the 50 meter high pagoda facing the river is a huge richly decorated entrance. Inside the pagoda is a small shrine with a Buddha image. It is possible to climb to the top of the pagoda using a stairway to the right of the structure. From there you will have magnificent views of the area with the nearby Hsinbyume Pagoda, several other pagodas, the Irrawaddy river and the mountains to the back of the pagoda.

    The Hsinbyume Pagoda, also called the “Myatheindan Pagoda”, lies in the north of the town of Mingun, very close to the stupa of Mingun Pahtodawgyi. The pagoda, which is snow white in color, resembles the description of the mythological mountain Mount Meru. The construction of the pagoda began in the year 1816 under King Bagyidaw of the Konbaung dynasty. Hsinbyume Pagoda is dedicated to the memory of the King’s cousin who became the first consort to Princess Hsinbyume, which means the “White Elephant Princess”. She was born in 1789 and died during childbirth in a nearby location in 1812.

  • Floating Gardens

    Inle lake is about 14 miles long and 7 miles wide at its most expansive. Roughly 25% of the surface is covered by carefully tended floating gardens. The Floating Gardens on Inle Lake were made by native people, In-Thars. They grow vegetables on floating islands which are collection of floating weed and water hyacinth. These floating islands can be cut, dragged by boats and ever be sold like a piece of land. Floating gardens can be found mostly in Kaylar, Inthan and Zayatgyi villages. Upon reaching the edges of Inle Lake, board a private motorboat to head out to Inle Lake, one of Myanmar’s most spectacular sights. Pass villages built on stilts over the lake, inhabited by the local Intha people. Observe the leg-rowing fishermen and see their floating gardens built up from strips of water hyacinth and mud and anchored to the bottom with bamboo poles.

From the 9th to 13th centuries, the city was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, the first kingdom that unified the regions that would later constitute modern Myanmar. During the kingdom's height between the 11th and 13th centuries, 4,446 Buddhist temples, pagodas and monasteries were constructed in the Bagan plains alone, of which the remains of 3,822 temples and pagodas still survive to the present day. Today, we will visit all the most famous temples of Bagan before enjoying a panoramic view of the sun setting over the plain of Bagan from one of the pagoda platforms.
