Since 1983, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage. This exceptional architectural complex is the result of a promise made by King D. João I. in return for his victory in Aljubarrota, a battle that came to it’s end on 14. August of 1385 and that assured his throne and guaranteed Portugal’s independence.

The construction of the settlement’s fortress is attributed to this event. The medieval village of the XII. century is famous for it’s Medieval Festival (between July and August), where the visitors can experience how people lived in the village during this age, and for the sour cherry liqueur, served in chocolate jars.
