    In vicolo dei Vetti stands one of the most beautiful and luxurious houses of Pompeii: the House of the Vettii which takes its name from its owners, Aulo Vettio Restituto and Aulo Vettio Conviva.

  • Lupanar

    Probably one of the most visited places by tourists is this 2 storey building for its prostitutes and their business. There were other brothels in town but these were usually located above a tavern or in private abodes not too luxurious either. The place was made up of 5 rooms on the ground floor and 5 on the upper one. Every room had a concrete bed with maybe, if you were lucky, a mattress or a mat.

    The Forum in Pompei was reserved to pedestrians and carts were not allowed. Only public buildings overlooked this area which was about 142 metres long and 38 metres wide. The Forum today is bare of statues and its ornate flooring and marble work. It is believed that after the eruption, the area got dug up and these were then re-used in other works.

The amphitheatre could house up to 20,000 people on 3 different levels. what we have found out at Pompei during the hot summer months, the spectators were protected by a type of dark linen covering. Adjacent to the arena you could see the great gymnasium where youngsters would work out.

  • Temple of Apollo
