Located approximately 19 kilometers southwest of Nagasaki Port, Nagasaki
Gunkanjima, also known as Hashima Island, served as a seabed coal mining base
owned by Mitsubishi Group. Reclaimed land, high-rise apartments, and various
facilities surrounded the island, resembling a sea fortress due to its
resemblance to a warship. However, in April 1974, the island closed as coal
resources depleted, leaving it uninhabited and in ruins. Fast forward to
January 5, 2009, when it was recorded in the "Kyushu and Yamaguchi
Modernization Industrial Heritage Group," marking the beginning of a new era.
On April 22, 2009, the prohibition on tourist landings was lifted, enabling
various travel companies to operate island tours. In 2015, Gunkanjima gained
World Cultural Heritage status as part of the Meiji Japan Industrial Heritage
Revolutionary Site. Notably, the renowned movie "Skyfall" was filmed on
Gunkanjima in Nagasaki, Japan, further adding to its widespread recognition.

This had been on my bucket list so delighted to have been able to not only visit to the island but land on it. Gunkanjima Concierge the tour operator were fantastic and despite the fact that the tour is in Japanese, they did provide an English speaking guide Mark who was most helpful in taking us through the island and some off the history behind it. A must visit for those coming to Nagasaki.
the cruise was amazing
Mine was cancelled due to bad weather (rough waves). No notification of any means was sent to me before the meet time. I only knew of the cancellation when I reached the meeting point which was the Gunkanjima Digital museum. (They did offer a 50% discount on the museum ticket as consolation)(I saw some locals approaching the counter and they too apparently only knew that their tour was cancelled, when they came to the museum) Some tips for those who are planning this trip. - Check the weather app beforehand, I saw that it was forecast to rain at noon that day (~a week prior) but I did not know to trust it or not, and it really did rain in the morning that day. - Check the operator website Gunkanjima Concierge (If the weather that day is bad) to see if your tour is cancelled. - I did not get on the tour so I could not confirmed if there were guides who could speak English, but with a bit of research, *wink* you could find other operators that state that they do provide English or Mandarin speaking guide on certain days. *wink*
