1 hoursAdmission Ticket FreeRide the well groomed and easy riding cycle trail from Waikino to the historic gold mine town of Waihi. Along the way you can view many of the historic sites from the peak of the Martha Gold mine's operating days including the Victoria Batteries where gold ore was broken down and processed before being transported out on the railway that now forms part of the trail you'll ride. You can take an optional tour to the Waikino museum and get a guided tour under the gold processing urns that were used to heat up gold ore before being processed. Ride beside the beautiful natural bubbling river all the way to Waihi. At its peak operating time this was the second largest gold mine in the world and is now a spectacular site to view from the top of the pit rim. Your knowledgeable guide will offer you little tidbits of history to accompany the impressive sights to be seen on this mini side trip for your tour including viewing the massive water pump tower that was used to keep the mine shafts clear of water.Waikino

Along the way you'll ride through one of the longest cycle accessible tunnels in the country, at 1.1km long the Karangahake tunnel is steeped in history and is an exciting element of the ride. Also take note of the historic railway bridges that you cross and marvel at the engineering that was achieved more than one hundred years ago to support the railway in this area.
