Highlights
This is a tailormade trip, taking people that are interested in the Ancient History of South Sinai.
See for yourself the very beginning of the alphabetic way of writing, invented by the Canaanites. Visit the Ruins of the Temple of Hathor, the Goddess of prosperity in Ancient Egyptian times. Sleep under the stars and listen to the Bedouin stories at the campfire.
Itinerary
Day 1
South Sinai
8 hoursAdmission Ticket FreePick up from your hotel at 8 am. We drive to Wadi El Maghara, where the ancient Egyptians were mining for turquoise. This is documented in Pharaonic tableaus carved into the mountain rock. A 30-minute climb will give us a perfect view of the mining area. One of the rock walls shows a surprisingly well-preserved tableau of a husband, wife and child holding hands. All 3 family members are pictured as being of the same height, which is unique in Pharaonic times. Lunch served at Wadi El Maghara. After lunch we head to Wadi Mukattab, (which is Arabic for "Valley of Writing"), also known as the Valley of Inscriptions. The wadi is named after its many petroglyphs. Nabataean, Arabic, Coptic, and Greek inscriptions are abundant. We follow the same route that the pilgrims took when they traveled from Cairo and Suez to Jerusalem. From here we will continue to Wadi Suggarat where we will see more inscriptions. day 2
South Sinai
8 hoursAdmission Ticket FreeAfter breakfast, we climb Mount Serabit. Here we explore one of the most spectacular sites in the Sinai; the Ruins of the Temple of Hathor, built around 2000 BC. Hathor is an Egyptian goddess, favored as the protector of the desert regions, and known locally as the Mistress of Turquoise. Continuing along the mountain plateau, we will stop at one of the most important places in history! Inside a cave, 30 incised graffiti in a "Proto-Sinaitic script" show the making of the alphabet. The incisions date from the beginning of the 16th century BC, when this area was extensively mined for turquoise and copper. The miners were mainly prisoners of war from southwest Asia. They presumably spoke a Northwest Semitic language, such as the Canaanite, that was ancestral to Phoenician and Hebrew. We will have our lunch on the top of Mount Serabit. South Sinai
8 hoursAdmission Ticket FreeAfter breakfast, we will check out of the camp. On our way back to Dahab we will visit Wadi Kharig. This is an old copper mine, in use during the Bronze Age (around 2000 BCE). You can see the names of the ruling Pharaos carved in the rocks.
