Highlights

Discover the profound strength and beauty of one of Australia’s oldest living cultures at Yolŋu power: the art of Yirrkala. Hosted in the new Naala Badu building at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, this world-class exhibition showcases nearly 300 works from 98 artists. Spanning from the 1940s to the present, the collection highlights the use of art as a means of cultural diplomacy, asserting sovereignty, authority, and pride through diverse mediums ranging from traditional bark paintings to contemporary film and sculpture.

Presented in partnership with the renowned Indigenous art centre Buku-Larrŋgay Mulka, the exhibition traces significant moments in Yirrkala’s history where artists adapted their practices and embraced new styles. Visitors can explore familial connections and cultural continuity while experiencing an immersive environment that includes sound and light projections. Whether you are an art enthusiast or a cultural explorer, this exhibition offers a rare opportunity to engage with the powerful stories of north-east Arnhem Land right in the heart of Sydney.

Comprehensive, far-ranging exhibition. I love the Yolnu art from Yirrkala after visiting the Buku-Larrngay Mulka Centre in 2021. Too much to take in with one visit. Will have to return.
