Plenty of reasons. Created by millionaire philanthropist and creator of Tiger Balm, Aw Boon Haw, along with his brother, Aw Boon Par, the park is definitely special. In it, there are 1,000 statues and 150 dioramas that strikingly represent eye-opening scenes from Chinese mythology, folklore, and history. And they are all incredibly graphic. You'll find it hard to resist taking photos (or selfies) with them. There are the infamous Ten Courts of Hell as well, and of course, Hell's Museum, the world's first museum dedicated to death and the afterlife from different cultures. The park is also historically and culturally significant. Fun fact: it was actually created to educate Chinese immigrants who couldn't read or write, so they could learn values similar to those found in Journey to the West.
What do the statues at Haw Par Villa represent?
The statues represent characters from the Chinese classic Journey to the West, one of China's four classic novels, while also depicting the Eight Immortals and, most famously, the consequences of sins in the Ten Courts of Hell, a representation of Taoist and Buddhist belief systems, and probably the most famous attraction in the park. Beyond the dioramas and sculptures, look out for symbolic animals and plants. For instance, the lotus for purity and the carp for success.
Where to park at Haw Par Villa?
Parking is easy to find at Haw Par Villa. You can either park at the main entrance car park along Pasir Panjang Road, open from 7:30am to 8:00pm (last entry at 7:30pm), or at Zehnder Road (Car Park C). If all else fails, there are other nearby locations like Science Park and Westway Shopping Mall. Just take note that parking at the main car park costs SGD 8 per entry for cars and SGD 2 for motorcycles, and payment is accepted in cash only.
