Highlights
Before the paper cup, before the plastic bag, there was the tee kong — a spent condensed milk tin, a piece of raffle string, and a hole punched through the lid. It was how Singapore's Hainanese kopitiam owners sent kopi out the door: simple, resourceful, and entirely their own. The tee kong is one of the most specific objects in Singapore's coffee shop story, and Heap Seng Leong on Northumberland Road still does it the same way today.
In this 3-hour workshop, you'll make a ceramic reinterpretation of that tin. Not a replica — a jar. Wheel-thrown on a full-size pottery wheel, fitted with a hand-built flat slab lid, a coiled built handle that sits across the lid the way a raffle string once did. The form follows the logic of the original: cylindrical, upright, considered. The material makes it something you keep.
Before you touch clay, we'll sit with the story behind the object. The Hainanese who arrived in Singapore after the 1870s, the coffee shops they built from repurposed colonial spaces, the multilingual vocabulary of the kopi order — kopi-C, kopi-O, siew dai — where the C comes from the Carnation label on the very tin the workshop is named for.
You'll leave with a jar that holds something of that history. What you put in it is up to you.
Pieces are fired and ready for collection within 8 to 12 weeks.

1.Handmade Nature of Ceramic Work
All pieces made in our workshops are handmade by participants. Each piece will carry the natural variations, surface marks, and imperfections that are inherent to the craft — including uneven walls, glaze pooling, colour variation, and tool marks. These are not defects. They are the character of a hand-made object. Workshop pieces are not produced to retail or commercial quality standards and should not be expected to be uniform in appearance.
2. Cracked and Crazed Pieces
Ceramic clay is a natural material with its own unpredictability. Minor cracks, crazing, or surface imperfections may develop during the drying or firing process and are beyond our control. A piece with minor cracks that does not crack through the base remains structurally sound and may continue to be used functionally — for decorative purposes, as a planter, a storage vessel, or for dry use. Cracked pieces should not be used for food, beverages, or liquid storage. Meso Ceramics does not offer refunds for cracked pieces resulting from the natural firing process.
Should you wish to have a replacement piece made, we are happy to arrange a replacement piece for a fee of SGD 25, subject to availability. You will receive your original piece along with the replacement.
3. Kiln Firing
Kiln firing is an unpredictable process. While we take every care in loading and firing your work, minor changes in colour, texture, and surface finish may occur between your unfired and fired piece — this is the nature of the medium and part of what makes each piece unique. Ceramic firing is an unpredictable process, and not all damage or loss can be prevented. Meso Ceramics will not be held liable for pieces that crack, warp, or are otherwise affected during firing.
4. Collection of Fired Pieces
Pieces are typically ready for delivery within 8 to 12 weeks of your workshop date. Our team sorts and packs pieces chronologically from the kiln, and we ask for your patience and understanding throughout this process. To allow us to manage this efficiently, we kindly request that participants refrain from enquiring about the status of their pieces before the 12-week period has passed.
5. Bookings and Cancellations
Workshop bookings are confirmed upon full payment. Rescheduling is allowed and subjected to availability and a SGD 20 administrative fee. No-shows and same-day cancellations are non-refundable. Meso Ceramics reserves the right to reschedule or cancel a session due to unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, participants will be offered a full refund or a transfer to the next available date.
6. Late Arrivals
Workshop sessions begin at the scheduled time. Participants who arrive more than 15 minutes late may not be able to complete all components of the session. No refunds or rescheduling will be offered for late arrivals.
7. Studio Safety
Participants use the studio at their own risk. The studio environment includes wet surfaces, sharp tools, and ceramic materials. Meso Ceramics is not liable for personal injury or damage to personal property occurring within the studio premises.
8. Photographs and Content
Meso Ceramics may photograph or film workshop sessions for use on our website and social media channels. If you prefer not to be photographed, please inform the facilitator at the start of your session.
