Mika Ninagawa's exhibitions are never just about "looking at her works," but
about stepping into a world she has created. This time, "mirror, mirror,
mirror" is being held at DDDART in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo. It is set in a place
where Mika Ninagawa has a deep connection with the land of Shimokitazawa. The
exhibition space is a converted house, and the light, atmosphere and
architecture itself are all incorporated into the language of the exhibition.
This exhibition centers on the concept of an Artist Book, with all objects,
installations, and video displays within the space revolving around the book.
The book and the exhibition are mirror images of each other, extending from
one another. Mirrors, light, and color are consistent elements in Mika
Ninagawa's repertoire, and in this intimate setting, their impact is even more
direct.
Visitors who choose the Artist Book option will also receive an Artist Book
from this exhibition. This is not a typical exhibition catalog, but a
composite work consisting of seven booklets, posters, stickers, and postcards
covered in a furoshiki-style envelope. It includes videos and unpublished
works from the artist's debut to the present, presented through page layout,
collage, and hand-binding. The curves, wrinkles, and individual differences in
the binding itself are all part of the creative intent. Readers can also
disassemble and reassemble the book themselves, continuing the creative spirit
of "destruction, regeneration, and further destruction."
The exhibition is co-organized by CCC ART LAB, TV Asahi and afumi inc., with
production assistance from Wonderstock Photo and Tomio Koyama Gallery, and
endorsed by brands such as Veuve Clicquot and Keio Electric Railway.
