【Yakushima】
・Yakushima is located about 60 km south of Osumi Peninsula and has a circumference of granite with 90% of its area covered in forest.
The center of the island has a range of mountains over 1800 meters high including Kyushu's highest mountain,Mt,Miyanoura.
・Yakushima Island is listed as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site for its unique ecosystem. About 20% of the island is designated as such, from the central part of the island where Jomonsugi Cedar is to the western part of the island through which the Seibu Rindo (West Forest Trail) road passes.
【Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine】TAIKOIWA ROCK NEW TRAIL HIKE 4-5 hours
The TAIKOIWA hike is solid hike that takes you out past the previous two courses and onto Kugurisugi Cedar, Shiratani Mountain Cabin, Nanahonsugi Cedar, Mononoke Forest (named after the animated film Princess Mononoke), Tsujitoge Pass and finished at the destination Taikoiwa Rock. From Taikoiwa Rock you can also see TACHUDAKE.
【JOMON SUGI 1280m 】*JOMON SUGI DAY HIKE 9-12 hours
Jomon Sugi, located at 1280m altitude, is hailed as the oldest Cryptomeria japonica Yakusugi known in the world. It`s age is not known for certain, but numerous attempts to accurately date this amazing tree have it at between 2,600 and 7,200 years old. The conservative estimates of 2,600 years would in fact mean it is not the oldest Yakusugi, as there are several Yakusugi with an estimated age of over 3,000 years. But given the range of estimates, it can be reasonably assumed at around 4,000-5,000 years.
