Highlights
Learn authentic Japanese home cooking from Michiko, a professional cooking teacher who has taught Japanese locals for years. Unlike a demonstration-style class, this is a hands-on experience where you prepare traditional dishes from scratch while learning the techniques, ingredients and cultural traditions behind them. Choose between two distinct experiences when booking: make handmade udon noodles from dough, including the traditional technique of stomping the dough, or prepare katsudon, one of Japan’s most popular comfort foods and a dish familiar to many anime fans. With a small-group setting, Michiko can provide personal guidance throughout the class. The experience is also family-friendly, making it a fun way for both adults and children to experience Japanese food culture in Tokyo.
Itinerary
Learn to prepare 2-3 dishes (choose between a hands-on class or demo), each of which is a beautiful, creative interpretation of traditional Japanese cuisine. You may enjoy the mouthwatering teriyaki chicken with its alluring marinade of mirin and soy sauce, or your host's take on chirashi sushi (a traditional rice bowl dish made with fresh, seasonal ingredients). The cooking experience will last about an hour before you sit down with your host for lunch at the dining table.
Your experience will conclude with an informal Japanese tea ceremony, after which you can ask for recommendations or directions for your return trip back to your hotel or elsewhere in Tokyo (return transportation is not included).
Please note: On select days, this experience will take place at a cooking studio located near the Kichijoji station, not the host's home. Also note that like many Japanese people, your host speaks very limited English. She will arrange to have a friend or family member join your experience to help with translation.
