Set on the eve of Chongqing's liberation and centered on Ciqikou, Chongqing
1949 tells its story through several storylines that unfold in parallel.

The Chongqing 1949 Grand Theatre, in the Ciqikou Ancient Town scenic area of
Shapingba District, is a large-scale, live-scene theatre built specifically
for Chongqing 1949 , and is described as the world's first single indoor
theatre of its kind. It has a total floor area of 25,000 square meters, stands
28.6 meters tall and seats 1,497 people.

Set on the eve of Chongqing's liberation in 1949, the show tells the story of
the many Communist Party members held in the Zhazidong and Baigongguan prisons
who endured torture without yielding, and recreates the sweeping scenes of the
city's liberation and defense. The story ends on the day Chongqing was
liberated, as a group of revolutionary martyrs, holding fast to their ideals
and beliefs, fall to the sound of the liberating gunfire on the road from
darkness toward dawn. They "gave their lives for the liberation of the Chinese
people," and from this "the Red Crag Spirit took shape." The production sets
out to meet the call for artistic works to have "strength, morality and
warmth" and to "show the beauty of faith and nobility," and is presented as a
historical drama with the mission of "promoting the Red Crag Spirit and
passing on its revolutionary legacy." Chongqing 1949 retells the Red Crag
classic across a broader span of time and space, showing different scenes at
the same moment in a montage-like staging, so the audience experiences this
chapter of revolutionary history through a powerful, immersive, all-around
sensory performance.
