The steeply sloped triangular roof, which is unique to regions with heavy snowfall, resembles the shape of hands joined together, which is why it is called a gassho-zukuri house. This is highly recommended and the tour guide is very friendly and speaks in both fluent English and Japanese. It is a must if you come 1st time to Takayama for Shirakawago without staying in the village. Enjoy.
