- Introduction -

  • Nijo Castle

Built in the early Edo period (1603), this flatland castle located in Nakagyo-
ku, Kyoto, was once the residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1994, it was
registered by UNESCO as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto, a
World Heritage site. In a narrow sense, Nijo Castle refers to the castle built
during the Edo period, but in a broader sense, it includes the residence of
the 13th Ashikaga Shogun, Yoshiteru, and the castle built by Oda Nobunaga for
the 15th Shogun, Ashikaga Yoshiaki. After Nobunaga exiled Yoshiaki to Kawachi
in 1573, the castle was burned down, and a new Nijo Palace was built
elsewhere, later presented to the Crown Prince. In 1867 (Keio 3), the 15th
Shogun, Tokugawa Yoshinobu, held the 'Taisei Hokan' ceremony at Nijo Castle,
returning political power to the Emperor, which made the castle famous. In
1939, the Emperor gifted it to the Imperial Household Ministry, and it was
renamed 'Nijo-jo Palace' the following year and officially opened to the
    public.

  • Kyoto Gyoen National Garden

Located in Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto, this is a national park. After the capital was
moved to Tokyo in 1869 (Meiji 2), the court nobles moved to Tokyo with the
Imperial family, leaving many of the noble residences around the Kyoto
Imperial Palace vacant and dilapidated. Moved by this, Emperor Meiji ordered
the preservation of the palace in 1877 (Meiji 10). To prevent fires in Kyoto
from spreading to the palace, the Kyoto Prefectural Government demolished the
vacant noble residences around the palace and organized the environment,
creating the Kyoto Gyoen as it is today. In 1949 (Showa 24), Kyoto Gyoen
became a national park and was opened to the public. Every spring, the cherry
blossoms in full bloom attract large crowds of visitors.

  • Yasaka Shrine

There are over 3,000 Yasaka Shrines throughout Japan, and the one in Kyoto is
the head shrine. Because it is located in Gion, it is also known as Gion
Shrine (Gion-san). The head shrine is located in Higashiyama-ku, Kyoto. It is
one of the Twenty-Two Shrines and was formerly ranked as a Kanpei-taisha (now
a separate shrine under the Association of Shinto Shrines). The Gion Matsuri,
held at the head shrine, is one of the largest festivals in Japan and attracts
many people every year. Yasaka Shrine is also one of the most popular shrines
    in Kyoto.
