Highlights
This popular walk takes us through beautiful Andalucian countryside, via a local beauty spot and on to finish at the renowned Molino del Santo hotel restaurant.
We leave Ronda down an old cobbled road beside the gorge and enjoy spectacular views up to the town on its clifftop plateau and the Puente Nuevo bridge. We then head out through open countryside towards the Guadiaro river and the Cueva del Gato or "Cat Cave", a local beauty spot named for the shape of the natural cave mouth. The mountain behind contains a network of water-filled tunnels and caverns. Each day thousands of litres of crystal clear water exit the cave via a waterfall to create a stunning, blue water pool.
We continue a short distance to the small village of Benaojan estacion and the Molino del Santo hotel, where we can relax on the terrace for optional refreshments before returning to Ronda in our minibus. Or choose to stay at the hotel for a delicious, leisurely lunch and return to Ronda by train or taxi.
Itinerary
Cueva del Gato
Walk down into the valley below Ronda for spectacular views of the gorge and Puente Nuevo bridge. Continue through countryside to a local beauty spot, where a waterfall creates a beautiful, crystal clear water pool. Option to finish with lunch at celebrated local restaurant at the Hotel Molino del Santo (need to arrange taxi back to Ronda). Note: Whilst most of this route is on wide tracks and quiet lanes with easy walking surface, the track above the river to the cave is narrow and weather-eroded in parts, with some short, steep ascents/descents. An alternative, flatter option can be taken but this misses some of the views.
