- Sightseeing Spots -

(1) Shrine & Temple Goshuin Course

• Kameda Hachiman-gu
  
  This shrine originated from the transfer of the deity Hachiman Okami from Kehi
  Jingu in Echizen Tsuruga (present-day Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture). It is
  one of the oldest shrines in Hokkaido and was a battlefield during the Boshin
  War. Bullet holes remain in the portable shrine hall.
  
  Today, it is worshipped by locals as a deity of martial arts and competition,
  and every year in mid-September, it bustles with many people for the final
  summer festival of the season.

  
  

• Hakodate Gokoku Shrine
  
  A shrine built as a Shokonsha (shrine for spirits) to honor the government
  soldiers who died in the Boshin War. You can overlook the city of Hakodate and
  the Tsugaru Strait from the torii gate, and it is now also popular as a shrine
  for matchmaking.
  
  It is also famous for its adorable amulets, making them popular souvenirs for
  loved ones.

  
  

• Sumiyoshi Shrine
  
  Said to have been built during the Kamakura period, this shrine enshrines
  Jurojin, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Hakodate Mountain. Located at the foot
  of Mount Hakodate, the path leading to the shrine hall is colored with Somei
  Yoshino cherry blossoms in spring, making it a famous spot for cherry blossom
  viewing. From the top of the slope, you can overlook the Tsugaru Strait and
  the cityscape of Hakodate, enjoying the scenery along with the cherry
  blossoms.

  
  

• Hakodate Hachiman-gu
  
  A quiet shrine in the forest founded in 1445. It is located in a scenic spot
  overlooking the Tsugaru Strait.
  
  Known as a deity of victory and martial arts, as well as a deity of financial
  luck and business prosperity. Near the shrine grounds, there is a cherry tree
  that survived after being mostly destroyed by a disaster, known as the 'Enmei-
  no-Sakura' (Life-Prolonging Cherry Tree). It is considered a guardian deity
  for navigation and fishing, and is affectionately known by locals as
  'Hachiman-san'.

  
  

• Funadama Shrine
  
  The oldest shrine in Hokkaido, located at the foot of Mount Hakodate.
  
  There is a legend that during the Kamakura period, Minamoto no Yoshitsune was
  able to land safely thanks to the protection of Funadama Myojin when he was
  about to be shipwrecked, and the shrine is also known for its Yoshitsune
  legends.
  
  Today, many people in the fishing industry and students preparing for entrance
  exams visit the shrine, as it is said to provide blessings for safe maritime
  travel, road traffic, and academic success.

  
  

• Yukura Shrine
  
  When the 4th lord of the Matsumae Domain, Matsumae Takahiro, suffered from a
  serious illness as a child, he was cured after bathing in a hot spring
  discovered by his retainer. In gratitude, he rebuilt the shrine hall.
  
  Also, during the Boshin War, Enomoto Takeaki, who had occupied Goryokaku, had
  250 wounded soldiers recuperate in this hot spring.

  
  

• Hokkaido Toshogu
  
  Known as Hakodate Toshogu, the water basin (chozubachi) placed on the grounds
  is a precious artifact that still bears bullet holes from the Boshin War.
  
  It is also the only 'Toshogu' shrine in Hokkaido.

  
  

• Yukura Shrine
  
  When the 4th lord of the Matsumae Domain, Matsumae Takahiro, suffered from a
  serious illness as a child, he was cured after bathing in a hot spring
  discovered by his retainer. In gratitude, he rebuilt the shrine hall. Also,
  during the Boshin War, Enomoto Takeaki, who had occupied Goryokaku, had 250

(2) Hakodate Power Spot Course

• Goryokaku Park
  
  Goryokaku was the final site of the Boshin War. Goryokaku Park is a historical
  site that preserves the history of the end of the Edo period. From the new
  Goryokaku Tower, you can overlook the star-shaped moat from which it gets its
  name.
  
  Every year around Golden Week, the cherry blossoms bloom, and it bustles with
  many tourists as a famous cherry blossom spot in Hakodate.
  
  The secret of the power of Goryokaku lies in its star shape, the 'pentagram'.
  
  It is said to generate great power for warding off evil.

  
  

• Tachimachi Cape
  
  A cape facing the Tsugaru Peninsula, surrounded by the sea with sheer cliffs,
  and a scenic spot in Hakodate.
  
  A scenic spot overlooking the distant Shimokita Peninsula. On the way up the
  slope to the cape, there is the grave of the poet Takuboku Ishikawa, who loved
