Highlights
Rising to 2,014 meters, Debela Peč is one of the most accessible yet rewarding summits in the Julian Alps — and one of the few where a full 360-degree panorama unfolds at the top with relatively little effort.
In just about 3 hours of hiking, you'll pass through spruce forest and alpine meadows before emerging onto the open summit, where on clear days the views stretch from Triglav and the Julian Alps across the Karavanke Ridge and down to Lake Bled.
Along the way, stop at the cozy Lipanca mountain hut — a classic Slovenian alpine refuge where you can refuel with local food and drinks before the final push to the top (own expense).
Led by a certified mountain guide in a small group of no more than 8, with hotel pickup, National Park fees, and transport all included, this is the most rewarding way to experience the Slovenian Alps without needing any prior mountaineering experience.
Suitable for active families and beginners alike.
Itinerary
Debela peč
Pickup from your Bled accommodation at 8:00 AM, followed by a 30-minute drive to the Pokljuka plateau at 1,300 meters. From the Medvedova Konta car park, you hike through dense spruce forest for around 45 minutes before reaching Planina Lipanca — a beautiful alpine meadow at 1,630 meters with traditional Slovenian farm buildings and the cozy Lipanca mountain hut, where you can stop for local food and drinks before continuing (own expense). From Lipanca, the trail steepens through larch forest and open rocky terrain to the summit of Debela Peč at 2,014 meters — one of the most accessible peaks above 2,000 meters in Slovenia. The 360-degree panorama takes in Triglav and the Julian Alps to the north and west, the Karavanke Ridge bordering Austria to the east, and on clear days Lake Bled to the south. You retrace the route back down, covering around 10 km with 700 meters of elevation gain in approximately 3 hours of hiking. Sturdy hiking shoes, layers, and water are essential. Back in Bled by early afternoon.
