  • Former Matsumoto Residence

    This is a typical aristocratic residence consisting of a Western-style
    building and a Japanese-style building, built by businessman Kenjiro
    Matsumoto, founder of Meiji College (now Kyushu Institute of Technology), to
    serve as both a residence and a guest house. The Western-style building was
    designed by Kingo Tatsuno, the father of modern Japanese architecture, and the
    Japanese-style building was designed by Kosaburo Kubota, who also supervised
    the construction of the Western-style building.

  • The former Kurauchi Residence is the main family home of three generations of the Kurauchi family - Jirosaku, Yasufusa, and Jirobei - who operated coal mines mainly under the Fukuoka Prefecture Agricultural Land Act from the Meiji period to the early Showa period, and also operated tin and gold mines in Oita Prefecture and elsewhere. The main house, reception building, and garden were constructed, and later a tea room and entrance hall were added.

    Today, the building, gardens, and surrounding area are designated as a
    national scenic spot.
