Montjuïc has been central to the cultural and political history of Barcelona. Archaeological remains of the Laietani tribe from 300 BC have been found at its base, making it one of the region's earliest settlements.

Montjuïc Castle, built in 1751 and accessible by cable car, was used to defend and control the city. The castle complemented the citadel, whose remains are in Parc de la Ciutadella, visited at the beginning of this Segway tour.
