The Hans Egede Statue is a famous landmark in Nuuk, Greenland. It honors Dano-Norwegian Lutheran missionary Hans Egede, who established Nuuk in 1728. The monument is located on a hill along the coast above Nuuk Cathedral in the city's old Old Nuuk district. A replica statue by August Saabye stands outside Copenhagen's Frederik's Church.
  • Public Art: Mother of the Sea

    26 minsAdmission Ticket Not Included
The Mother of the Sea, maybe the most well-known of all Greenlandic myths and tales, is a statue along the coast. The Mother of the Sea, according to tradition, was irritated by the Inuits' terrible activities at the settlement and, as a punishment, collected all the animals the Inuits used to hunt in her flaming hair at the bottom of the sea. When "The Blind One" arrived to help, he combed her hair, gathered the dirt in a clump, and then flung it away. Everything came to life at the same time, and there was a bear, fox, hooded seal, bearded seal, ringed seal, harp seal, common seal, walrus, narwhal, and a slew of birds."
  • Greenland National Museum and Archives

    26 minsAdmission Ticket Not Included
The Greenland National Museum was one of the country's earliest museums, opening in the mid-1960s. It contains various artifacts from archaeology, history, art, and handicrafts, as well as information on ruins, graveyards, and structures.
