Highlights

This is a rainforest day, not a beach day. The Bijagua corridor sits on the Caribbean slope between the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes, about two hours inland from the Guanacaste coast, and the bird list there has almost nothing in common with the dry forest visitors see from the hotels. Toucans are not birds of this coast — they are birds of that forest, and in Bijagua all three of the region's species are regular, close enough at the feeder gardens for real photographs rather than record shots. The same forest holds Snowcap and Black-crested Coquette, the specialities experienced birders come for, and sloths, which simply are not part of the dry Pacific lowlands. We spend five hours on site, at birding pace, inside private reserves rather than public trails. Your guide works this corridor year-round and keeps public eBird records, so what we tell you about the birds can be checked. Wild birds, wild forest: we promise the time, the access and the eye, never a species list.

Itinerary

  • Bijagua de Upala

The Bijagua corridor sits on the Caribbean slope, between the Tenorio and Miravalles volcanoes: wet, tall rainforest, with a completely different bird list from the dry Pacific coast. We spend five hours inside private reserves and feeder gardens at birding pace, with time to work a fruiting tree, wait out a mixed flock, and come back to a feeder when the light turns. All three toucans of the region are regular here, Yellow-throated Toucan, Keel-billed Toucan and Collared Aracari, and at the feeders they come close enough for real photographs. This is also reliable ground for Snowcap, Black-crested Coquette, Violet-headed Hummingbird and Rufous-tailed Jacamar. For experienced birders the specialities are here too: Tody Motmot, Keel-billed Motmot, Spotted Antbird, White-collared Manakin, Great Curassow and Crested Guan. Because this is rainforest and not dry forest, sloths are part of the day in a way they are not on the coast. Your guide works this corridor year-round, keeps public eBird records and carries a scope. Wild birds in wild forest: we promise the time, the access and the eye, never a species list.
