He was distinguished with three papal gold roses and visited by Popes Paul VI (1967), John Paul II (1982, 1991 and 2000), Benedict XVI (2010) and Francisco (2017). Urraca of Castile (wife of D. Afonso II), Queen Santa Isabel (wife of D. Dinis), D. Filipa de Lencastre (wife of D. João I), D. Leonor de Aragão (wife of D. Duarte), D. Leonor de Avis D. João II), among others. In 1527, there were 161 inhabitants in the village.
