On the night of January 23rd, 1904, a devastating fire raged through Ålesund. Within only 16 hours, 850 houses were burnt down and 10.000 people were rendered homeless. After the fire, only 230 houses were left in Ålesund's town center, but after a remarkable effort from the local people and mostly thanks to helping from Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, and other European countries, the town had been rebuilt already in 1907.Aksla Mountain

After the competition of architects, Sverre Knudsen was chosen as the person to design the new Ålesund Church. The foundation stone for the new church was laid down on 13 July 1906 by the new King Haakon VII. Roughly 2,000 square metres (22,000 sq ft) of marble cover the church's façade.
