Unfortunately, much of the castle was destroyed during World War II, but it was reconstructed in 1958 to its current form. Tōdai-ji also features a number of other important structures, including the Hokke-do Hall, which houses important Buddhist scriptures, and the Nigatsu-do Hall, which is known for its beautiful views of Nara city. The temple is surrounded by a large park, which is home to many wild sika deer, which are considered sacred in Japanese culture. Visitors can feed and interact with the deer in the park.
