Highlights
This tour is unique as you will get to learn about the tinga tinga paintings and how they got to be, they are original from Tanzania, and only found around East Africa. Furthermore you will get to learn how to paint them from the painters themseleves. The painters lovingly make their work, and it can be challenging to make ends meet in such a labour-intensive and competitive field. These tinga tinga paintings are one of a kind.
Paintings are handmade. Like handmade clothes or furniture, paintings show the hand of their maker so you can add a touch of personality to the home. Mass produced items cannot compete with that.
Itinerary
Mwenge
We will start at Mwenge the heart of Dar es Salaam, and head to the Mwenge Woodcarvers Market it's filled with artisans hard at work creating beautiful and unique items. Wooden masks are particularly popular, but you’ll also find treasures in craft shops selling a whole range of goods from fabrics to sandals, beaded necklaces. We will look around if you like to do some shopping you are more than welcome. Then we will head to the painters who make the famous tinga tinga painting. Tingatinga is a painting style that developed in the second half of the 20th century in the Oyster Bay area in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) and later spread to most East Africa. These paintings are famous for being striking in colour due to being made from masonite and are very popular among Americans and Europeans as its easy to travel with them. After that you can choose if you either want to head to the kariakoo market and experience how a local goes by their day to day activities or do you want to go to the village museum to see some traditiona houses of different villages in Tanzania and watch the Ngoma dance
