Itinerary
Court Garden
15 minsAdmission Ticket FreeYour tour begins in the elegant Court Garden of the Würzburg Residence, a refined green space laid out between 1613 and 1617 under Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria. Designed in the style of an Italian Renaissance garden, it offers a harmonious introduction to Würzburg’s aristocratic past. At its center stands the Diana Pavilion, completed in 1615 by Heinrich Schön the Elder, with radiating paths extending from its arches in symmetrical fashion. Crowning the pavilion is a replica of Hubert Gerhard’s statue of Bavaria (1623), while the original design of the garden can still be admired inside the Kaisersaal of the Residence.Würzburg Residence
1 hoursAdmission Ticket Not IncludedYou will then step into the grandeur of the Würzburg Residence itself, one of Europe’s most celebrated Baroque palaces and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Commissioned in 1720 by Prince-Bishop Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn and his brother Friedrich Carl, the palace was designed by the brilliant court architect Balthasar Neumann and completed in 1744. Its scale and artistic ambition reflect the power and prestige of the Prince-Bishops, making it a defining symbol of Würzburg.Residenzplatz
15 minsAdmission Ticket FreeContinuing toward the historic center, you will pass through Residenzplatz and along Domstraße, where the city’s Baroque character unfolds through elegant façades and lively streets. This pleasant walk offers glimpses of local life while connecting the Residence to the cathedral district.Schönborn Chapel
15 minsAdmission Ticket FreeYour next stop is the Schönborn Chapel, located at the end of the north transept of the cathedral. Serving as the burial place of the influential Schönborn family, the chapel is a fine example of Baroque artistry. Construction began in 1721, with Balthasar Neumann contributing to its design from 1723. Completed in 1724 and consecrated in 1736, it stands as a testament to both religious devotion and dynastic legacy.Würzburg Cathedral
15 minsAdmission Ticket FreeYou will then explore the imposing Würzburg Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Kilian. Stretching 103 meters in length, it is the fourth-largest Romanesque church in Germany and a remarkable example of architecture from the Salian period. Although heavily damaged during the bombing of March 1945, the cathedral was carefully restored after World War II, preserving its historical significance while reflecting the resilience of the city.Marktplatz
15 minsAdmission Ticket FreeFrom here, a short walk leads you through the bustling Marktplatz, the vibrant heart of Würzburg, where locals gather and historic buildings frame the square. This lively setting provides a contrast to the solemnity of the cathedral and offers a glimpse into the city’s everyday rhythm.Falkenhaus
30 minsAdmission Ticket FreeYour tour concludes at the Falkenhaus, one of Würzburg’s most recognizable landmarks. Its striking yellow Rococo façade, richly decorated with ornate stucco work, makes it a visual highlight of the old town. Originally an 18th-century guesthouse, the building was severely damaged during World War II but meticulously reconstructed using historical photographs. Today, it houses the city’s tourist information center and municipal library, blending historical charm with modern function.
