Donghwasa Temple is a historic ancient temple of the Silla Dynasty situated in
the Donghak-dong valley, where the Waterfall Valley, Bindaegol, and Susutgol
valleys of Palgongsan Mountain converge on either side. It is the head temple
of the 9th District of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order. It was founded by
Geukdan in 493 (the 15th year of King Soji) and was named Yugasa. Later, in
832 (the 7th year of King Heungdeok), it was rebuilt by the Royal Preceptor
Simji; it is said that the temple was renamed Donghwasa because paulownia
flowers were in full bloom around the temple even though it was winter.
Most of the existing temple buildings were constructed during the
reconstruction under King Yeongjo and include Daeungjeon Hall, Yeonggyeongjeon
Hall, Cheontaegak Hall, Yeongsanjeon Hall, Bongseoru Pavilion, Simgeomdang
Hall, Chilseonggak Hall, Sansingak Hall, Eunghyanggak Hall, Woneumgak Hall,
and Cheonanmun Gate. Additionally, affiliated hermitages include Geumdangam,
Biroam, Naewonam, Buddoam, Yangjinam, and Yeomburam.Bangjja Yugi Museum
Located at the foot of Mt. Palgong, famous for its magnificent scenery, the
Daegu Bangjja Yugi Museum opened on May 25, 2007. The museum spans one
basement level and two floors above ground (site area 17,880㎡, total floor
area 3,758㎡) and features facilities such as an outdoor performance stage and
an experience area, as well as exhibition halls including the Yugi Culture
Room, Donation Room, Reproduction Room, and Special Exhibition Room in the
exhibition building. The exhibition building houses the Yugi Culture Room,
which provides a general overview of the history of yugi and the craftsmanship
of those who carry on the tradition, and the Donation Room, which preserves
the works of Bangjja Yugi master Lee Bong-ju. It consists of the Bangjja Yugi
Reproduction Room, which demonstrates the production process using life-size
and working models, and the Special Exhibition Room for self-planned
exhibitions. Additionally, there are facilities such as a video education
room, a souvenir shop, a storage room, and an archive. In the outdoor
experience area, visitors can try various traditional games including
Jegichagi (footbag kicking), Tuho (arrow throwing), ring tossing, and Yutnori
(traditional board game).
The Daegu Bangjja Yugi Museum is exhibiting some of the 1,489 pieces of
Bangjja Yugi produced and collected throughout the lifetime of Lee Bong-ju, a
master craftsman designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Heritage.
