It is the oldest monastery in Italy together with the monastery of Santa Scolastica. Founded in 529 by San Benedetto da Norcia on the site of an ancient tower and a temple dedicated to Apollo, it has undergone over the course of its history an alternate story of destruction, looting, earthquakes and subsequent reconstructions. The majestic abbey church, completely destroyed during the Second World War, was later completely rebuilt and consecrated by Pope Paul VI in 1964. It has 3 Cloisters Entrance cloister or Southern: area where the temple consecrated to Apollo stood. Cloister of Bramante also known as Sant'Anna: in the middle position of Renaissance style built in 1595. The civitas vetus of the city represents one of the best preserved walls built in polygonal work in pre-Roman times. This is a typical cantilever arch, which forms a so-called scea door. A first Benedictine abbey was founded in 996 by San Domenico di Sora: some ruins remain a short distance from the present complex.
