Otaru was designated as a Japan Heritage site in 2025. This course allows you to experience the history and scenery of Otaru while also visiting one of Sapporo’s most popular attractions, Shiroi Koibito Park, making it a comprehensive tour unique to the regular sightseeing bus.
The first stop is the Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway, a popular filming location for movies. At the summit station, there are five observation decks offering panoramic views of Otaru city, the Sea of Japan, and the surrounding mountains, which are recognized as part of the Japan Heritage cultural assets. In addition to the views, the summit area features shops, cafés, a ski museum, a chipmunk park, and activities such as ziplining.
At the base of Mt. Tengu, there is also The Glass Studio in Otaru ※, where you can observe the glassmaking process of Otaru glass or participate in a glassblowing experience (approx. 10 to 20 minutes) with advance reservation.
※Closed every Tuesday
After enjoying the scenery, it is time for lunch. At Otaru Bine, a renovated former Hokkaido Bank head office built in the Meiji era, you can enjoy a seafood grill meal while experiencing the historical atmosphere. Savor local specialties such as marinated herring and seasonal seafood.
After lunch, the tour visits the Former Nippon Yusen Otaru Branch ※. Built in 1906, this Western-style building reflects modern European revival architecture and is both a Japan Heritage cultural asset and a designated Important Cultural Property of Japan. The interior features intricate details such as decorative pillars, wallpaper, and ceiling designs, showcasing the prosperity of Otaru in the past.
※Closed every Tuesday and on September 24. On these days, the visit will be skipped and free time in Otaru will be extended to approximately 3 hours
After visiting the historical building, you will get off at Otaru Canal Terminal for free exploration of Otaru. Nearby attractions include the Otaru Canal, Denuki Koji, Sakai-machi Street, as well as popular spots such as Kitaichi Glass, Otaru Music Box Museum, and Kitakaro. It is recommended to plan your route in advance.
On the way back to Sapporo, the tour will stop at Shiroi Koibito Park for sightseeing and shopping ※. The park features an English garden with around 200 rose bushes and seasonal flowers, as well as a clock tower where mechanical animal figures perform a lively parade every hour.
※Access to paid areas is optional
This course allows you to fully enjoy the historical landmarks and popular attractions of both Otaru and Sapporo. Why not experience a fulfilling sightseeing trip departing from and returning to Sapporo?
