- Spot Introduction -

Hahoe Village

Hahoe Village is a hierarchical village where the Pungsan Ryu clan has lived
for generations. It is called "Hahoe" because the Nakdong River, which is
shaped like an omega, surrounds the village. In the center of the village
stands a large tiled house bearing the Ryu clan's family crest, and
surrounding it are rows of thatched-roof houses that have been preserved in
their original form. The village suddenly came into the spotlight after Queen
Elizabeth II of England visited in 1999, and in August 2010 it was registered
as a World Heritage Site.

・Bongjeongsa Temple

The Geuknakjeon Hall within the temple grounds is the oldest wooden building
remaining in Korea, and many other cultural treasures remain, including the
Daeungjeon Hall, Hwaeom Lecture Hall, and Gogeumdang Hall, all built during
the Joseon Dynasty, as well as a representative three-story stone pagoda from
the Goryeo Dynasty. Queen Elizabeth II of England visited Bongjeongsa Temple
during her visit to Korea in 1999, praising it as a "beautiful temple" and
saying that "today's visit will be remembered for a long time." She also left
a message in the guestbook saying, "I welcome Korean spring at the tranquil
mountain temple, Bongjeongsa."

・Byungsan Seowon (Byungsan Academy)

Byeongsan Seowon is a Confucian academy built in 1572 by Ryu Seong-ryong, a
Confucian scholar of the mid-Joseon period, who moved the Pungak Seodang, the
educational institution of the Pungsan Ryu clan in Pungsan-eup, to its current
location. Byeongsan Seowon is surrounded by beautiful nature; the Nakdong
River flows in front of the academy, and the mountains beyond surround it like
a screen. It is considered the most beautiful Confucian academy architecture
in Korea.

- Food Information -

• Menu: Salted Mackerel Set Meal. Andong Ganggo Deung-eo (salted mackerel) is
a nationally famous specialty. The reason why mackerel from Andong, an inland
area of Korea, is considered delicious is that the mackerel caught at Pohang
Port or Ganggu Port is transported to Andong over two days, and salt is
sprinkled on it just before it spoils to enhance the flavor. This is because
the enzymes released just before spoilage combine with the salt to create a
delicious flavor in the mackerel.
