Highlights

  • Kawachi Wisteria Garden,

At the late April to early May, a tunnel of wisteria in gradations of light
purple, white, and pink is at its best, and the garden is filled with a
    soothing fragrance.

  • Munakata Shrine

A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines,
dedicated to the sea gods. It offers a serene cultural experience and insight
    into ancient Japanese traditions.

  • Kokura Castle

Kokura Castle, a symbol of Kitakyushu, offers a glimpse into samurai heritage
with its reconstructed keep housing historical exhibits and panoramic views of
the city. Adjacent to it, Kokura Castle Garden is a serene Edo-period-style
strolling garden featuring a pond, Shoin-style mansion, creating a tranquil
    escape from urban life

Kawachi Wisteria Garden
From late April to mid-May, when the best time to see the wisteria is from late April to mid-May, about 22 different kinds of wisteria flowers are in full bloom, and the large wisteria trellis of about 1,000 tsubo (about 1,000 m2), covered with wisteria, is a spectacular sight.
The main attraction is the two types of wisteria flower tunnels, one 80 m long and the other 110 m long. The glossy gradation of colorful clusters of light purple, white, pink, and other colors in the tunnel is mesmerizing to behold. The fragrance of wisteria in the park is also soothing, allowing visitors to enjoy wisteria with all their senses.
Munakata Taisha Shrine,
A UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Japan's oldest and most sacred shrines.
It comprises three shrines: Hetsu-gu on the mainland, Nakatsu-gu on Oshima Island, and Okitsu-gu on Okinoshima Island. Dedicated to the three Munakata goddesses, it is revered for maritime safety and travel protection. The Hetsu-gu houses the Shinpokan Museum, displaying over 80,000 national treasures excavated from Okinoshima.
Kokura Castlet
Kokura Castle was originally constructed by Hosokawa Tadaoki in 1602 and completed in 1608. It served as a key stronghold during the Edo period and was home to prominent clans like the Hosokawa and Ogasawara. The castle was destroyed by fire in 1837 and later abandoned during conflicts in 1866. The current structure, rebuilt in 1959 using ferro-concrete, features a visually enhanced design rather than an exact historical replica.
Visitors can explore exhibits on local history, interactive samurai experiences, and enjoy panoramic views of Kitakyushu from the top floor. The surrounding Katsuyama Park and Japanese garden add to its charm.
