Highlights

During this experience you will learn to make sushi of your choice or traditional Obanzai style dishes such as cooked and marinated mushrooms, pickled or slow-cooked seasonal vegetables and tofu dishes prepared the traditional way over an informative conversation with your host Emika in her cozy kitchen. Emika will also teach you to prepare traditional, homemade miso soup from scratch.

The cooking portion of your experience may last about an hour before you enjoy the meal you prepared together.

Emika's family owns an organic vegetable field where she harvests most of the vegetables that she uses in her cooking. Prepare to be amazed by the sheer variety of daikon radishes grown on their farm!

Join Emika and learn all about traditional Japanese cooking techniques, from chopping to marination, from a lovely local!

Itinerary

  • 31-30 Katsurainariyamachō

This is a unique opportunity to visit a local home and experience traditional Japanese culture and cuisine. Meet Emika at her home for a private Kyoto cooking class that starts or ends with traditional matcha prepared by Emika or her father during a tea ceremony. Learn to make sushi, gyoza, okonomiyaki or another traditional main, along with two Obanzai-style vegetable dishes. Discover seasonal ingredients and classic Japanese cooking techniques in a fun, engaging environment. Emika even grows organic vegetables that may be used in your class. All skill levels are welcome! After cooking, enjoy the meal you prepared together. If you choose the market tour option, join Emika for a 1-hour visit to a supermarket and produce store where locals shop. Discover Japanese ingredients and seasonings, and get Emika’s help choosing ingredients to take home. Choose the calligraphy option to learn basic brush techniques and write a favorite kanji, Japanese word or your name on a traditional shikishi board to take home. This private Kyoto cooking and cultural experience is family-friendly and especially fun for children—a great choice for families looking for things to do with kids in Kyoto.
