U.S. 82nd Airborne Division paratroopers landed in the area, some unintentionally dropping into the town itself. A famous event involved paratrooper John Steele, whose parachute snagged on the church steeple; he pretended to be dead before escaping German capture. After fierce fighting, the Allies secured the town by morning.
