Unlike most ancient Egyptian temples, is dedicated to two gods, the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon god Haroeris “Horus the Elder”. The temple is atypical because everything is perfectly symmetrical along the main axis. The existing temple was begun by Ptolemy VI Philometor (180–145 BC) and continued under later rulers, most notably Ptolemy XIII (47-44 BC), who built the inner and outer hypostyle halls.
