The Red Courtyard, the largest ancient structure in Bergama, is also known as the "Temple of the Egyptian Gods". Dedicated to the Egyptian religious god Serapis and his dependent Isis and Harporakes, the building was later dedicated to the Apostle John and became one of the 7 churches of Revelation. The building was later dedicated to the Apostle John and became one of the 7 churches of the Revelation. " There is a reconstructed Egyptian statue outside but the actual remains are right next to it. I was very impressed to see something from Egypt. It's really a beautiful piece of work. The statue does not have a head part, but you can easily see on the outside of the statue that he was wearing the headrest-style thing that the pharaohs wore. There are no words to say about it anyway, I am astonished at how they built such a high church 2000 years ago. really important work. there is nothing like it.
  • Izmir Bergama Museum

    1 hoursAdmission Ticket Not Included
In Bergama, which is one of the earliest discovered ancient cities among the archaeological settlements in Anatolia, the first research studies began in 1865 as a result of the high reliefs of the Zeus Altar within the Byzantine wall in the Acropolis. Between 1878-86, these studies were turned into official excavations by C. Humann and A. Conze. A small warehouse museum was established in the garden of the excavation house in order to preserve the artifacts unearthed after these excavations. Between 1900-13, excavations were carried out in the Acropolis by W. Dörpheld, H. Hepding, and P. Schatzwann. Due to the increase in the artifacts unearthed as a result of the excavations in the Asclepion as well as the excavations carried out in the Acropolis, the existing building was insufficient and a new museum building was needed.
