So, you’re heading to Taipei and wondering how to navigate Taoyuan International Airport (TPE).

The big question is how to reach the bustling city centre. Good news: it’s much easier than you think.

In this guide, you’ll discover every option for getting into town. Whether you want to hop aboard the Airport MRT, catch a bus, or book a private transfer, we’ll make sure your first step outside the terminal is a breeze.

Important Things To Remember When Flying to Taipei

Before we jump into navigation, here are a few essentials to keep in mind.

Some travellers call Taoyuan Airport "Taipei Airport," but this can cause confusion. Taoyuan Airport is the main international airport of Taiwan, located in Dayuan, Taoyuan, which is approximately 40 km west of Taipei.

However, there is also Songshan Airport (TSA), which is located in downtown Taipei.

While Songshan Airport also handles international trips, it typically only handles short-haul flights and domestic trips. This guide will solely focus on Taoyuan airport, the main international gateway.

The best way from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei will depend on your priorities.

Do you prioritise speed, cost, or comfort more? Most first-time visitors prefer the Airport MRT, while travellers on a budget would rather opt for buses.

Now, let's break down each option in detail.

Taking the Taoyuan Airport MRT (Train)

If you want to get to Taipei fast and fuss-free, the Taoyuan Airport MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is your best bet. It’s a dedicated airport train line and generally the fastest way from the airport to Taipei Main Station. The ride takes about 35 minutes on the Express service. Travellers love it for being modern, clean, and easy to navigate.

There are two services you can take on the Airport MRT: the Express Service and the Commuter Service. Here's what you can expect from both of them:

What to Expect

Express Service

Commuter Service

Stops

Limited stops: Taipei Main (A1), New Taipei Industrial Park (A3), Chang Gung Memorial Hospital (A8), Airport Terminal 1 (A12) & Terminal 2 (A13)

All 22 stations (every stop between Taipei Main and Huanbei)

Amenities / Comfort

Forward-facing seats, luggage racks, wireless charging, free Wi-Fi. More spacious.

Sideways benches at many stops, fewer premium amenities; large luggage space but simpler setup.

Reasons For Picking This Service

Great when you want speed, fewer stops, and comfort (especially when arriving or leaving).

Better if your hotel or destination is off one of the smaller stations; or if you’re up for a more local experience.

How Much Is The MRT From Taoyuan Airport to Taipei?

Both the Express and Commuter services are the same price. A one-way journey from Taoyuan International Airport costs NTD 160 (USD 5) for adults, while children under 6 ride free with a fare-paid adult. You can buy a single-journey ticket from ticket counters at the airport station.

Another option is getting an EasyCard, Taiwan’s reloadable smart card.

It lets you tap into the Airport MRT, city MRT, buses, and YouBike rentals, plus pay at convenience stores and cafés. You’ll also get small fare discounts on public transport. For example, a Taipei MRT ride that costs NTD 30 (USD 1) with a paper ticket is only NTD 24 (USD 0.80) with EasyCard. It's one card with endless uses, which allows you to save time, coins, and hassle throughout your trip.

How To Find The Airport MRT

Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 have Airport MRT stations, making it extremely accessible.

After clearing customs, you should be able to spot overhead signs that direct you to the Airport MRT. If you're in Terminal 1, the station entrance is on the B1 Level, near the food court (also labelled as 美食廣場 or Měishí Guǎngchǎng). In Terminal 2, it's at the B2 level.

Trains to Taipei depart directly; there’s no need to transfer. Just make sure you board the correct train type (look for signs or ask a staffer if it’s Express or Commuter).

When you arrive at Taipei Main Station, the Airport MRT drops you off at its own dedicated platform inside the complex. From here, you have plenty of onward options.

  • Metro: Follow the signs to connect to the Red or Blue lines of the Taipei Metro. It’s a short walk through underground passages.

  • Rail: The same station also links to Taiwan Railway (TRA) and the High-Speed Rail (HSR).

  • Bus or taxi: You’ll find bus bays and taxi stands if you prefer to continue above ground.

If your hotel is near Main Station or in Ximending, you’re practically there already. A quick walk or a single metro stop will get you to your destination.

Taking an Airport Bus

If you are arriving outside MRT hours, then you're more likely to opt for a ride on an airport bus.

Several routes connect Taoyuan Airport to Taipei, and while it takes longer to get to the city centre than the MRT, it is reliable and comfortable. They also run 24/7, making them extra convenient.

For reference, here's the bus schedule for the 1819 bus:

  • Early Morning (12am-6am): Every 30-60 min.

  • Daytime (6am-8pm): Every 15-20 min.

  • Evening & Night (8pm-12am): Every 20-40 min

The buses are air-conditioned and have comfy seats. They also typically have free Wi-Fi onboard and sometimes USB charging. You can place large luggage in the under-bus compartments. The driver or staff will help load it, or you can do it yourself.

Travel time is usually around an hour. If it’s off-peak hours, it can be as quick as 45-50 minutes. However, if there is heavy traffic (weekday rush hour), it might be a bit over an hour. But generally, it’s a smooth ride on the highway into town.

How Much To Take The Airport Bus?

If you are on a budget, the bus is the cheapest way from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei, with fares ranging at NTD 120-140 (USD 4-5) one-way. For a bus ride of over 40km+, this is practically a steal.

How To Find The Airport Bus

After leaving the Arrival Hall, follow signs for “Bus to City” or Bus Station.” Each terminal has a ticket area with counters for different companies.

One of the most popular ones is Kuo Kuang 1819 Bus, which offers round-trip tickets from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei, as well as an option to get round-trip bus tickets and an EasyCard. Tickets can be booked online and collected at the counter.

Once you receive your ticket, you will be given a pass to the next bus and directed to the boarding platform number outside. At the airport, buses have their own designated bays outside the terminal. It's very straightforward, as your ticket will have a bus number and platform number printed on it.

You’ll then be directed to the boarding bay outside. The 1819 runs 24/7, every 15-20 minutes by day and 20-40 minutes late at night. The ride takes 55-60 minutes, dropping you at Taipei Bus Station.

Here are the estimated times to reach popular destinations in Taipei if taking the 1819 bus:

Destination / Stop

Estimated Time from Airport (T2)

Taipei Bus Station / Taipei Main Station

55-60 min (traffic dependent)

Sanchong Playground

50-55 min

Sanchong Station

Taking a Taxi or Private Transfer

Want to skip the commuting and get dropped off right at your accommodation? Then you'll probably prefer hailing a taxi or booking a private car transfer from Taoyuan Airport to Taipei.

This is perfect if you're exhausted from a long flight, are burdened by heavy bags, or just want to get to bed to beat the jet lag.

How Much Does a Taxi from Taoyuan International Airport to Taipei Cost?

Taxis are the most comfortable option, but also the priciest.

Fares are metered, starting at NTD 70-75 (USD 2-3) for the first 1.25 km, plus distance charges. Night-time rides may include a surcharge. Highway tolls (NTD 40 / USD 1) are added to the meter. A typical total to central Taipei is NTD 1,100-1,500 (USD 37-50).

For reference, here's what you can expect to pay depending on your destination:

Destination

Approx. Duration

Approx. Cost

Taipei Main Station

40-60 min

NTD 1,200-1,300 (USD 40-43)

Ximending

45-60 min

NTD 1,200-1,400 (USD 40-47)

Taipei 101 / Xinyi District

50-65 min

NTD 1,300-1,500 (USD 43-50)

Songshan Airport

50-65 min

NTD 1,300-1,500 (USD 43-50)

Beitou Hot Springs

55-70 min

NTD 1,400-1,600 (USD 47-53)

Shilin Night Market

50-65 min

NTD 1,300-1,500 (USD 43-50)

National Palace Museum

50-65 min

NTD 1,300-1,500 (USD 43-50)

Daan District (incl. Daan Park)

45-60 min

NTD 1,200-1,400 (USD 40-47)

Nangang Exhibition Centre

NTD 1,400-1,600 (USD 47-53)

Neihu District

55-70 min

NTD 1,400-1,600 (USD 47-53)

If you're a group of 3 or 4 splitting the taxi fare, this isn't too bad.

However, if you're a solo traveller, this could be a hefty price to pay. Tipping is not customary in Taiwan, so there is no need to tip your driver after the ride.

How To Find a Taxi at the Airport

Photo: @aaarthurrr on Instagram

After clearing customs, follow the signs for “Taxi” to the official stands outside each terminal. Licensed taxis are bright yellow and queue in an orderly line with an attendant managing the flow. They operate 24/7, so you’ll always find a ride, even in the middle of the night.

Uber is also available. Book through the app once you’re ready to exit; pickup points are near the official taxi area. Prices are usually similar to metered taxis (sometimes slightly cheaper), and payment is cashless.

While hailing a taxi is usually easy, there are some things you need to note. Avoid random drivers offering rides inside the terminal; if they aren't bright yellow or in the official taxi stand, they are unregistered drivers who will probably hike up the price.

When inside a taxi, make sure you have your hotel name/address written in Chinese to show the driver (especially for smaller hostels or B&Bs). Some drivers are not fluent in English, so this will help with the communication barrier.

How Much Does a Private Transfer from TPE to Taipei Cost?

Pre-booked private transfers typically cost NTD 1,000-1,500 (USD 30-50), depending on vehicle type and extras. The big advantage is knowing the fare upfront and having a driver waiting with your name at arrivals. It’s ideal if you’re travelling with kids, lots of luggage, or just want a smooth door-to-door ride without queues or language barriers.

Since it's pre-booked, you won't have to pay cash.

You can book your private transfer online and just meet your driver at the airport. If you want a "no-hassle" transport option, pick this. You literally just walk out and go.

Getting To Taipei After Hours

You might be wondering: what if your flight lands at midnight (or even later)?

Don't worry. There are several ways to safely leave the airport and head to your hotel. If you'd rather stay put, there are also options for you to take within Taoyuan Airport itself.

Here are some tips for those with late-night arrivals:

  • Airport MRT: Not 24/7. Last trains leave just before midnight; first trains are around 6am. Landing after 11:30pm or fly out very early? Use bus or taxi.

  • 24-hour buses (Kuo-Kuang 1819): Run to Taipei Main Station all night, typically every 30-60 minutes. Fare about NTD 135 (USD 5). At 2am you’ll reach town in around 40-45 minutes. From Main Station, grab a short taxi to your hotel if the city MRT is closed.

  • Taxis: Always available. One taxi ride would be roughly 30-40 min at night; expect NTD 1,200-1,500 (USD 40-50)with night surcharge. Best for families, heavy luggage, or zero waiting.

  • If you’re too early/late to move: The airport is safe, open 24/7, with seating, free Wi-Fi and convenience stores. Waiting for the first MRT is doable; otherwise, take the 24-hour bus or a taxi.

  • Hotels & check-in: Tell your hotel you’ll arrive after midnight. Smaller places may need a door code or special instructions. If you’re landing at 2am, consider booking the night before.

  • Safety: Taipei is very safe at night. If you’re walking a few blocks with bags, a short taxi hop from Main Station is cheap and easier.

Looking for a place to stay? Or are you landing in Taipei for your layover? Luckily, there are several hotels near the airport where you can stay for the night (or even your whole vacation!)

Here are some popular accommodations near the airport:

  • Novotel Taipei Taoyuan International Airport - closest full-service hotel, with shuttle buses.

  • TY Motel - budget option just a few minutes from the terminals.

  • City Suites Gateway - near the airport, decent choice for overnight stays.

  • Plaza Premium Lounge (inside the airport) - pay-per-use resting space with showers and snacks.
