Highlights
You can experience repairing broken objects using the traditional lacquering technique KINTSUGI. You will approach the WABI-SABI, which is viewed as a variety of beauty woven by changes without negatively accepting dirty or chipped vessels as deterioration.
Please bring your ceramics or porcelain that you would like to repair. If you don’t, please let us know. (Only two items per person due to storage space limitations.)
We will glue the broken pieces with lacquer.
It takes about a week for it to harden as we use natural lacquer.
If you would like to continue the process, please make a reservation after one week.
Overseas travelers can send vessels in the process of being worked on by EMS. (Shipping cost is additional)
KINTSUGI kit is available for purchase.
*Please note:
It won't be completed in one session.
Natural lacquer can cause inflammation if it comes into contact with the skin. Always ensure that you wear gloves when using it.
Itinerary
2-16 Akashichō
Traditional techniques of lacquering (Makie) allow you to experience KINTSUGI which repairs broken objects. The process involves applying and drying the lacquer about four times, depending on the condition of the cracks and chips. It takes about a month to be finished. We hope you can feel and accept the Japanese spirit of taking time to repair things slowly, further nurturing them with the power of nature. It's a way of valuing and cherishing objects. Our class will be friendly to beginners. The instructor who teaches you is a lacquer artist so she is very knowledgeable about lacquer and traditional crafts. We have Japanese and foreign tourist participants, also staff members who can speak a bit of English. You would enjoy cross-cultural chatting! If you have a broken vessel, we will proceed with the first process. By purchasing a gold patch kit, you can continue to repair it at home.
