Auckland Museum was good. It is a well-rounded museum, covering history, biodiversity, nature, Maori and culture. It also has great amenities like clean restrooms, lockers, cafes and disability access. I also topped up for a guided tour to show me highlights of the museum, as well as another top-up for special Maori cultural show. I recommend the Maori show in the museum if you don't have the time to go all the way to Rotoroa for Maori cultural sites. It was also the Mataraki weekend so the museum had special shows. There was also special exhibition for Wildlife Photographer of the Year, which is free with the ticket. That exhibition was one of the best wildlife ones I've seen. In short, I highly recommend this museum for first-timers in New Zealand.
