Highlights
Recife's old town sits where two rivers meet the sea — and this hunt takes you through the history that grew up around that meeting point.
This app-led scavenger hunt takes you through Recife on foot, using phone-based riddles to guide you from one landmark to the next. No guide, no fixed start time.
• Stand at Marco Zero, the symbolic ground zero of Recife Antigo and the point from which all distances in the city are measured
• Walk the legendary Rua do Bom Jesus, one of Brazil's oldest streets and the former centre of Dutch colonial trade in the Americas
• Visit the Igreja da Madre de Deus, a baroque church that has watched over the waterfront since the 17th century
Around 2 hours, any group size, available in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.
Where the Atlantic meets the rivers, Recife's story begins — and this tour tells it from the start.
Itinerary
Recife
Starting at the Marco Zero area of Recife Antigo, Pernambuco, Brazil, you'll open the Explorial app, enter the 6-digit game code that you received by text and Viator chat message, and set off into one of Brazil's most historically layered old towns. No guide, no fixed start time. Your first stop is Marco Zero, the large circular mosaic at the heart of Recife Antigo. Built on an island where two rivers flow into the Atlantic, this is where the Dutch West India Company established one of the most significant colonial settlements in the Americas. From there, the hunt leads to Rua do Bom Jesus, a street barely changed since the 17th century. Home to Dutch merchants, Sephardic Jewish traders, and the first synagogue in the Americas, it carries layers of history few streets can match. The route finishes at the Igreja da Madre de Deus, a baroque church standing at the waterfront since 1715. Its ornate interior and battered exterior speak to every chapter of Recife's long past. The tour takes around 2 hours at an easy pace. Recife Antigo is small, dense, and full of stories — and this hunt brings all of them to the surface.
