Escape the urban pulse of Nagoya and step into Japan’s timeless countryside with a day tour to Shirakawago and Hida Takayama. Begin your journey in Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the iconic Gassho-style houses dot the landscape like scenes from a storybook. Nestled amid rugged mountains, this serene village whispers tales of resilience and tradition, brought to life by knowledgeable guides who unravel its rich history and the ingenuity of its architecture. Wander the narrow streets, peek into preserved farmhouses, and feel the weight of centuries in every wooden beam and snow-dusted vista.
Next, the tour sweeps you to Hida Takayama, a charming town dubbed “Little Kyoto” for its nostalgic streets lined with Edo-period wooden houses, sake breweries, and artisan shops. Stroll through the Sanmachi Suji district. Here, the air hums with the scent of cedar and the clatter of geta sandals echoes faintly in memory, as your guide shares stories of samurai legacies and merchant life. Opt for the Hida Beef set, and savor the region’s prized delicacy—tender, marbled beef grilled to perfection, a culinary crown jewel that melts on the tongue. This seamless blend of rustic beauty, cultural depth, and gastronomic delight makes for an unforgettable plunge into Japan’s heartland, all within a day’s reach from Nagoya.

I had a wonderful trip to Hida Takayama (old houses, some dating hundred years back) and Shirakawago (wooden houses with thatched roofs in a valley surrounded by forests and mountains - still snow-capped in May). The Hida grilled beef lunch was a nice touch. But it was the guide, Gu-san, who really made the trip all good. He was effectively trilingual in Japanese, Chinese and English; and was very methodical, very organized and anticipative of customer needs (toilet visits, garbage plastic bags, seating plan). He introduced each site and explained what we would see on the selected route before we got there with a map and even PowerPoint slides. Each of us was given a map of the two destinations. This made our self-guided walks more productive. He suggested places/stores to visit, souvenirs to buy, food to try, and where to find toilets along the route. Gu-san is the best tour guide I have come across. Top marks for him! The driver, Ito-san, had the tough job of driving for 160-200 km or 2.5 hours each way. He was a careful driver but the highways were so full of metal grating speed bumps every 100m or so at some stretches, it woke us up with every jolt… Overall, I would give 5/5 for this tour.
Amazing guide liu who came highly prepared with maps both electronic and paper with planned maps. Above and beyond guide.

The tour was great and the lunch was lovely. We throughly enjoyed ourselves walking through Shirakawago.
If you only have a few days in Nagoya and want to experience the Shirakawa-go Village and Takayama, this would be a great way to do so. Although you only have 90-120 minutes per stop, its enough to see the sights and taste the food. It's not one to go shopping for hours and immerse in the culture. Our English-speaking guide, Leonardo, helped in making key suggestions on where to go, what to see, what to eat and how to get there while we were on the bus. So we easily got to identify how to maximise our time. He even had recommendations on where to go and what to eat near the Nagoya station. His thoughtfulness and initiative ensured that we made the most out of our quick trip!
Nice guide tour mr alberto (english speaker) and ms hely (chinese speaker) The tour itself give much time for us to explore both takayama and shirakawago Once again thanks for the bus driver, the tour guides, and also pelago for the experience
