【Sapporo TV Tower】
Created by the harmony of the city and nature, you can take in the most iconic
night views of Odori Park. This is a landmark tower standing in the heart of
Sapporo. From the observation deck 90 meters above ground, you can enjoy a
360-degree panoramic view of Sapporo at night. Both the west side, which
overlooks event venues like the Snow Festival, and the east side, which
features a night view unique to Sapporo that blends the city and nature, are
highly recommended.
【Sapporo Clock Tower】
A landmark of Sapporo, Hokkaido, and one of the few remaining American-style
buildings in Hokkaido. It serves as a symbol of the introduction of Western
education to Japan in the 19th century and the era of Hokkaido's development,
and is now designated as an Important Cultural Property. Located at North 1,
West 2, Chuo-ku, Sapporo, it is about a 5-minute walk from Odori Station on
the Sapporo Municipal Subway. Along with the Former Hokkaido Government
Office, it is a major sightseeing spot in central Sapporo.
【Former Hokkaido Government Office】
Looking toward Seomyeon from North 3-jo, you will see the majestic Former
Hokkaido Government Office building at the end of the street. Known by the
nickname Red Brick Office, this brick structure was built in 1888 and is an
American-style Neo-Baroque building. For about 80 years until the current new
building was completed, this structure served as the administrative center for
the Hokkaido government. The interior is open to the public for free,
featuring exhibits that trace the history of Hokkaido.
【Odori Park】
Odori Park is a park located in the heart of Sapporo, stretching approximately
1.5 kilometers from Odori West 1-chome to Odori West 12-chome in Chuo-ku. As
the city developed, it was renovated as a recreational space in the city
center, becoming not only a place for citizens to relax but also a venue for
international exchange. Odori Park is a park located in the heart of Sapporo,
stretching approximately 1.5 kilometers from Odori West 1-chome to Odori West
12-chome in Chuo-ku.
【Nijo Market】
It is said that Nijo Market was established in the early Meiji era when
fishermen from Ishikari Bay began selling fresh fish here. In the past, fish
markets lined the area across from the Sosei River, from West 1-chome to East
2-chome. Later, soba noodle shops, taverns, and greengrocers appeared, forming
the foundation of today's market. Over a century has passed, and it still
serves as the kitchen for the citizens today. Due to its central location and
high foot traffic, it is bustling with tourists coming to buy Hokkaido
specialties like crab and scallops. Additionally, the market houses multi-
tenant buildings like Noren Yokocho, which host many unique eateries. Today,
it has become a popular food street on par with Maruyama and Tanukikoji.
【Sapporo Beer Museum, Sapporo Beer Garden】
The Sapporo Beer Museum underwent a complete renovation in April 2016 and
offers premium paid tours, including special programs where you can taste the
'Sapporo Beer' recreated using the 1881 brewing method. After feeling the
passion poured into Japanese beer production by our predecessors, you can
appreciate the taste of beer on a deeper level. In the beer hall, converted
from red brick buildings that were once a sugar factory and a malting plant,
you can enjoy freshly brewed draft beer while savoring Jingisukan (lamb
barbecue). To ensure the perfect draft beer, they use a 'rotating tap' to pour
the beer into the mug in a 'single pour' motion, creating foam during the
process. You can taste 'CLASSIC' (sold exclusively in Hokkaido), which is
poured into a 500ml mug in 3 seconds to ensure freshness, as well as beers
sold exclusively at the beer garden.
【Hokkaido Museum】
The Hokkaido Museum is a museum that interprets the nature, history, and
culture of Hokkaido from the perspective of being based in Northeast Asia. In
addition to Ainu traditional crafts, there are many bird's-eye views and
dioramas from the early Showa era, making it enjoyable for visitors of all
ages and nationalities. Don't miss the participatory exhibits, such as
touching real fossils or writing sentences using the Ainu language passed down
through oral tradition.
【Historical Village of Hokkaido】
Located within Nopporo Forest Park, the Historical Village of Hokkaido is an
open-air museum opened to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hokkaido's
development. The museum relocates, restores, and preserves historical
buildings from the Meiji, Taisho, and early Showa eras that reflect the
industry, life, and culture of Hokkaido's development period. The village is
divided into four areas—town, farm, mountain village, and fishing village—to
recreate the scenes of that time. Stepping into the exhibition area feels like
being in Hokkaido over 100 years ago. In summer, visitors can enjoy a ride on
a horse-drawn tram, while a horse-drawn sleigh is recommended in winter. The
village frequently hosts activities to experience the culture of the
development era, such as traditional toy making and straw craft workshops. The
'Winter Life Experience,' limited to the winter season, is a great opportunity
to understand the harsh life of winters during the development era.
【Hokkaido Jingu】
In 1869, Emperor Meiji issued an edict to enshrine the 'three deities of
development' in Hokkaido as the 'spiritual home of the pioneers,' which is the
origin of Hokkaido Jingu. At that time, Judge Yoshitaka Shima, who was in
charge of Sapporo's city planning, decided to build the shrine in the Maruyama
area. It is surrounded by mountains on three sides and faces a vast plain on
the other. The pioneers worked tirelessly to clear the virgin forest, and
after the shrine dedicated to Shinto deities was built, it became a spiritual
pillar for the pioneers, where people gathered to talk. In 1964, with the
permission of Emperor Showa, Emperor Meiji was additionally enshrined, and
today, four deities are enshrined in the shrine. As guardian deities
protecting the development of Hokkaido and the happiness of its people, they
remain closely linked to the lives of Hokkaido residents, with traditional
rituals held for events such as New Year's visits, exorcisms, Setsubun, and
weddings. The shrine grounds are lush with greenery, and squirrels can
sometimes be seen. When spring arrives, cherry blossoms and plum blossoms
bloom, attracting countless flower viewers.
【Sapporo Central Wholesale Market Outer Market】
Every morning, freshly picked vegetables and fruits from across Hokkaido, as
well as freshly caught fish and shellfish, are transported to the Sapporo
Central Wholesale Market. Adjacent to the market where wholesalers trade is an
outer market open to the general public. About 60 shops, including
fishmongers, greengrocers, dry goods stores, and dried fish shops, line the
area. Starting at 6:00 AM, highly fresh, carefully selected ingredients are
displayed on the stalls. There are also many sushi shops and set-meal
restaurants that use fresh ingredients from the market to provide seasonal
delicacies at reasonable prices.
【Shiroi Koibito Park】
There is plenty to see here, such as the Factory Walk where you can observe
the production process of Sapporo's famous 'Shiroi Koibito' cookies, a
workshop for making your own 'Shiroi Koibito' sweets, and exhibitions on the
history of chocolate and antique chocolate cups. In addition to the shop
selling 'Shiroi Koibito' products, the park also features 'CANDY LABO', a
specialty store for candy art.
【Mt. Moiwa, Sapporo】
Mt. Moiwa stands at an altitude of 531 meters and is located in the center of
Sapporo. In the Ainu language, it is called 'inkarushibe' (a place where one
climbs to the summit to keep watch over the surroundings). The late Edo period
explorer Matsuura Takeshiro wrote in his 'Shiribeshi Nisshi' that 'for the
Ainu people, Mt. Moiwa provided a vantage point and was also regarded as a
sacred mountain.' From the summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the
Sapporo cityscape and Ishikari Bay in the Sea of Japan. From the mountainside
to the summit, you can ride the 'MORISU-CAR', a mini cable car that uses a
world-first drive system. Mt. Moiwa is easy to climb and is very popular among
Sapporo citizens. The five hiking trails (ranging from 2.4 km to 4.5 km in
length), which can be tackled with light gear, are bustling with hikers on
summer weekends.
