Fireflies
There are about 2,000 species of fireflies worldwide, most of which are
tropical. The fireflies seen here are a species scientifically known as
Pteroptyx Tener. Each individual has a lifespan of about 3 months, and because
they reproduce in successive generations, they can be seen all year round.Selangor River
The mangroves along this river are densely populated with Sonneratia
Caseolaris. Fireflies gather on the leaves of these trees, known as
'Berembang' in Malay, in search of nectar. The larvae also feed on snails and
other creatures near the river, so fireflies only inhabit riverbanks with this
type of mangrove.
