There are said to be around 2,000 species of fireflies worldwide, most of which are tropical. The fireflies you can see here are of the species Pteroptyx Tener. Each individual lives for about three months, and they are replaced by new generations one after another, so you can see them at any time of year.
The Selangor River is densely populated with Sonneratia Caseolaris (a type of mangrove in the family Nymphoraceae). Fireflies gather on the leaves of this tree, called Bermbang in Malay, attracted by its nectar. The larvae also feed on shellfish and other organisms found near the river, and fireflies inhabit only the riverbanks of this type of mangrove.
